Carnegie's endowments funded 1,679 public libraries in 1,412 towns and cities across the United States between 1889 and the mid-1920s. In 1904 Carnegie awarded the Phoenix board $25,000, with the stipulations that the city provide the land and that municipal taxes would maintain the library in perpetuity.
